William Mattoon assisted in the construction of the Terre Haute and Alton Railroad, and it is in his honor the town of Mattoon, Illinois is named. Prior to the town’s establishment, the land consisted of swamp grass and prairie, but as the railroad spurred more westward movement, Mattoon flourished, growing at an impressive rate. The town’s long history includes a rich heritage tied to the family of Abraham Lincoln who settled in 1831 about three miles from Mattoon in Coles County. Although Abraham never resided in the county, he frequented the area while he worked as a lawyer.
Today, Mattoon has much to offer prospective homebuyers, including a fantastic location in Central Illinois, access to beautiful lakes, a wide variety of recreation opportunities, a working downtown, a strong economy, and an abundance of close-knit, small-town charm. Just forty-five minutes from the University of Illinois, Mattoon has easy access to Indianapolis, St. Louis, and Chicago, as well as several major transportation routes as it sits at the junction of Illinois Route 16 and Interstate 57. Moreover, the area is home to several attractions, including Shady Crest Orchard, Meadowview Golf Course, Lake Paradise, Okaw Valley Orchard, Mattoon Golf and Country Club, The Great Pumpkin Patch, the thirty-five acres of the Douglas-Hart Nature Center, Lytle Park Pool, Buxton Garden Farm, Lake Mattoon, Silver Star Roller Rink, and AMC Showplace Mattoon 10.
